Article on teaching math

If you have the Envision curriculum and are looking to make lessons more student-centered here are some ideas:

Phase Resources and Ideas  Notes
Math Routine Number Talks
Routines- Estimation 180
Emphasize mathematical reasoning, number sense
Blend in individual work, pair/small group work and whole class discussions
Launch/Explore (8-10mins) Solve part from Solve and share OR NCDPI Tasks OR other rich multi-step tasks
Blend in individual work, pair/small group work
Scaffold with questioning. Do not teach or model up front!
Explain (8-10 mins) Share part from Solve and Share-
Note: if time permits allow them to solve and share with another task after debriefing the first problem. Avoid direct modeling and teaching.
Students should own this time as they share strategies used during the solve/explore phase.  Teacher should ask questions and make connections between different strategies!
Elaborate/Extend / Small Groups
(rest of block)

Teacher-led small groups- Various materials including problems from independent practice or other resources
Digital learning or personalized learning work

Math games- NCDPI games or other math games

Tasks- NCDPI tasks, Illustrative mathematics tasks, Independent practice from Envisions

Make sure that students have worthwhile and rigorous activities to work on if they are not with you.
Exit Ticket If desired, bring them back together for 5 minutes for a closing task.  Most teachers tend to want this to be individual work for assessment purposes, but it could also include small group work.
